#SOCIALNETWORKS: 4th-Annual Social Media Week Will Educate & Inspire Worldwide
The first Social Media Week went live in 2008, as Twitter was just hitting the mainstream and Lehman Brothers announced it was going bankrupt and would take down the economy with it. For better and worse, much has change. And Social Media Week continues to expand. It started to stress connectivity across continents last year, and this year the list of host cities already includes Barcelona, Bogotá, Doha, Hong Kong, Jeddah, LA, Shanghai, and Turin (among others). Individuals can register at any point for this year’s program, and organizations can prepare submissions to offer sessions for next year. What will the 2012 week bring?

#Tech: Security Of Cloud Computing Up For Debate
One of the oft-touted statistical arguments about air travel is that driving to the airport is the most dangerous part of a flight. A variation of that theme was stated by Simon Crosby, CTO of Citrix, in a panel debate over cloud computing and security. As we have noted here, Amazon’s services went down a week ago and – more dangerous still – Sony’s PlayStation gaming network suffered an attack that got information on millions of users.
Crosby admitted that such high-profile problems certainly undermine trust in the technology of cloud computing. Nevertheless, he responded, the event is rather like a plane crash: lots of headlines and recrimination, yet being in an airplane (or the cloud) is still the safest way to travel (or compute). Others are not yet so sure.

Tech: Great Guidance To Develop Social Media Strategy
The influences of social media on our language, our reading and writing habits, and our communications expectations have been phenomenal. Our blog has tried to help our readers traverse the SM landscape. And today we turn to a peer, Chad Norman, Internet marketing manager for Blackbaud, who has a wonderful presentation and how-to concerning setting up a SM ‘Listening Post.’ But more importantly still, he explains why a Listening Post can help tailor your tactics of SM-outreach to help achieve your organization’s larger strategic goals. The key term for Chad is ‘Listening.’
While listening is critical at an event like the 2011 Nonprofit Technology Conference, it’s also a key function back in the offices of our nonprofits. Listening to our supporters can help in so many ways, and social media has made it extremely easy to so. But how?

Fundraising: Resources and Seminars
One of the services we periodically try to provide our readers is a timely compendium of resources about fundraising and the skills thereof. In this installment have some online resources to find and to apply for grants from the federal government and from private sources.
To start off your spring drive, get some tips and inspiration from a free webinar: this Wednesday, GrantSpace.org is sponsoring an online text/chat seminar entitled “Turning Your Volunteers Into Fundraisers.” It is free to register and the seminar runs 1:00pm to 2:00pm. The event is entirely text/chat based (no audio), so one could easily enjoy one’s lunch and participate as well!

Resources That Will Build Your Nonprofit
Image via Wikipedia
Today we present one of our periodic omnibus entries that includes a number of resources, updates, and seminars that have come our way – and that we believe are of particular value to our readers. The turning of the calendar inspires many of us to resolve to improve personally and professionally. Here are a few tools that could do both.
Boston University and The Chronicle of Philanthropy are hosting a webinar entitled “2011 Fund-Raising Forecast:
Trends and Techniques You Need to Know.” And who doesn’t need to know how to fundraise in an economy that remains dormant?
Nonprofits are about to begin their fourth year of raising money in an economic downturn. Join The Chronicle’s veteran fund-raising reporter, Holly Hall, and two other nonprofit experts to learn the trends and techniques nonprofits are using to bolster their donations, even in these challenging economic times, and what you need to stay ahead of the curve. Among the topics we’ll explore:
- The winning techniques from the crucial year-end giving season
- How best to attract donors at all income and age levels―and what turns them off
- Low-cost ideas that will help you get strong returns
- What tax-law debates and changes mean for donors in 2011
- How new research on donors and giving trends can help steer you to success
The seminar runs on Thursday, January 27, 2011 – 2:00 – 3:00 p.m., Eastern time. Registration is done online, and The Chronicle suggests registering as an office/group, and turning it into a staff training session.
The folks at GlassPockets.com have updated their interactive map of foundations and grant providers searchable by metropolitan region. Pick your closest city (or the one you are in) on the map, and start finding those donors!
And finally, The Foundation Center has provided another of its occasional lists of online resources for nonprofits. The six provided most recently focus on web/communications technologies and nonprofits. Look into some of the great resources by clicking here.
As we move into the second half of January, let’s revitalize those New-Year Resolutions about growing our good works and expanding our fundraising opportunities!
